From the very beginning of Natura Rab, we proudly lean back on the centennial historical heritage of family Kaštelan. The scarce nature of the land of island Rab has been the only resource for many domestic families, including ours. Agricultural legacy is deeply embroidered within us, hence we deeply aspire to preserve it through our daily undertakings, materialising our relationship towards the surroundings we exist in; using all of historically passed on knowledge and experiences of our ancestors deployed with the help of modern day technology.
The family heritage of agricultural establishment together with the principal cornerstones responsible for upbringing and later success of all future generations was set by Mr. Josip Kaštelan, known as “Veli Rošić”. In the burdensome circumstances of the first half of the 20th century, often struck by lack of food and general scarcity, he successfully managed to institutionally educate all ten of his children, on the basis of means originating from agricultural production. Widely known as a clever and a progressive man, his agricultural products were supplied to all hotels on the island, including his awarded red wine from village Barbat.
The inherited family tradition was then continued by his son Josip, “Jojo”, who once again successfully passes it on to his son Dušan. Together with his family, after deciding to abandon the city streets and return to his birthplace, he modernises and further develops the agricultural production under the unique name Natura Rab, paying homage to the centennial tradition of his family, underlining high ecological and ethical standards. Momentarily, the family business is gradually being passed on to the fourth generation - his middle son Matija.
GO BACK IN TIME
Glimpse at the quintessence of medieval ages through a short time lapse of our appearances on Rapska Fjera, of which we’ve been key participants from the very beginnings. The first and largest medieval summer fair in Croatia, Rabska fjera is based on tradition started 21st of July 1364, when the City Council of Rab decided to celebrate and honor King Louis the Great who freed them from the Venetian rule, as well as holiday honoring St. Christophor, patron saint of the town of Rab. The entire island goes back in time during those days. Rapska Fjera is being held every year from July 25th to July 27th.
